Save Recipe: Jerk Turkey Burgers with Oven Roasted Sweet Potato Fries

ImageThe grilling season is here and what better way to celebrate than with a burger and fries?  Well, before you grab the ground beef and those plain white potatoes consider trying something different.  Today's recipe, "Jerk" Turkey Burgers With Oven Roasted Sweet Potato Fries by Chef John Adamson and compliments of Brassfield Estate (Clearlake Oaks, CA) makes ground turkey sizzle with the help of some simple jerk seasoning.  Add in another twist with melt in your mouth sweet potato fries and complete the meal by pairing it with a Brassfield Estate Zinfandel.  Your grilling season celebration will not only be a creative variation on the standard burger and fries but it will also be an elegant meal.

"Jerk" Turkey Burgers With Oven Roasted Sweet Potato Fries

Serves 4

"This is a family recipe of mine that is simple enough to make after a day at work but has a flavor profile that is really exciting and unique. Be sure to make extra sweet potato fries! The kids love 'em." - John Adamson, Chef

For the sweet potato fries

  • 3 pounds sweet potato, cut ¼" x 2" (French fry shape)
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose seasoning blend such as Lawry's or Paul Prudhomme's
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

For the burgers

  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons "Jerk" seasoning (wet and dry formulations available in the spice section)
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 4 tomato slices
  • 4 red onion slices

To make the sweet potato fries:  Combine all ingredients in a stainless steel bowl and mix well. Place on baking sheets, in one layer, making sure not to overlap the fries.  Cook in a 350 degree oven tossing with a spatula after the fries begin to crisp at the edges.
Cook the fries until they are crisp on all sides, but still moist in the middle. Place cooked fries in a bowl and sprinkle with salt and serve immediately.

To make the burgers: Combine all ingredients in a stainless steel bowl and mix well. If using a dry seasoning blend, look to see if salt has been added to the spice mix. If it has not bee been added, add 1 ½ teaspoons of salt per pound of meat. Form into four patties and grill slowly over wood or charcoal based fire until done. Build hamburgers with remaining ingredients.

About Brassfield Estate Zinfandel

A lively aromatic medley of cedar and brambly dark fruits give a slight character of cooked jam in the initial offering from the glass. The soft entry is highlighted by ripe raspberry and blackberry notes within a soft, round mid-palate, and followed by a balanced structure of tannins and acidity to the lengthy finish. Enjoy with barbequed fare, spicy tapas or Mediterranean cuisine.
