Take a look and let us know what you think of this month's recipes...
This has been a fantastic year for Food and Wine readers, each new issue is such a treat full of delicious recipes, informative articles about the ever changing world of food, and terrific wine suggestions. The November issue offers you the "Ultimate Thanksgiving Planner", strategies and recipe suggestions to make this year's Thanksgiving more flavorful and less stressful. Anyone remember Trader Vics? well it seems that a return of the Tiki Trend is fast approaching and if you're in need of a new skillet follow along with the F&W staff as they test out the best and worst available to home cooks. Explore the origins of American Red wine and find out why Yogurt is still considered to be one of the new "Superfoods". All of that and soooo much more! - written by foodie heather Potato Crisps with Chive-Sour Cream Dip - What a fabulous use for potato peels, these are super addictive, makes me want to cook with potatoes every night just so I can have the peel. Asian Pork, Mushroom and Noodle Stir-Fry - Who doesn't love a noodle bowl, this is a meal that every member of the family big and small will love. This recipe works well with Soba & Udon noodles too. | I keep thinking it can't almost be time for Thanksgiving again, can it? But sure enough, there arrives my Gourmet with the crispy, bronzed plump holiday bird on the cover. I love how the magazine covers every type of Thanksgiving cook there is: the "Over the Top'' overachiever who thinks nothing of the extra time required to make celery apple granita palate cleansers; the "Four-Hour Feast'' for those who just can't be bothered except with one-pan wonders like cranberry tangerine conserve; the "Harvest's Home'' vegetarian who wants to indulge in smashed potatoes with (meatless) roasted-garlic gravy; and the "Come Together'' cook who wants to do a south-of-the-border twist on tradition with the likes of adobo turkey with red-chile gravy. Feel free to mix and match menus, too. - written by Carolyn Jung I'm especially intrigued by the recipe for "Sautéed Lemon Maple Frisee'' because I've never cooked frisee before, only had it in salad mixes. rate, comment & access recipe "Unstuffed Sweet-and-Sour Cabbage'' also caught my eye because it's a simplified, quicker version of a classic. The hearty sauce made with dried cranberries, dark brown sugar, tomatoes, pork, and beef chuck is cooked with blanched green cabbage quarters. rate, comment & access recipe

Although, Thanksgiving is not surprisingly a bit part of Bon Appetit this month, thanks should really be given to the inclusion of a nice selection of non-thanksgiving articles and recipes for those of us who want to cook the other four weeks of November. Top among these are “fast easy fresh” recipes that really appeal including chocolate pudding with espresso cream, mouth watering biscuits, and a spicy variant of shrimp scampi. The seasonal ingredient of the month is pomegranates with several tempting recipes; health wise the focus is on olive oil; and Molly Wizenberg provides us with a taste of Paris. Getting into the holidays a bit early, one of my favorite baking cookbook authors – Dorie Greenspan provides a go-to holiday cake recipe. And last, but not least, this year’s Bon Appetit Thanksgiving has a heritage menu by Boulevard’s Nancy Oakes and Pamela Mazzola along with salted, rather than brined, roast turkeys, several stuffing variants, easy sides and an all pumpkin dessert spread. - written by foodie pam Pomegranate-Marinated Lamb with Spices and Couscous – I was drawn to the lamb pomegranate combination and the full flavor depth of the braised lamb. rate, comment & access recipe Fish & Chips Meal – This complete meal includes pan-fried fish, chips, tartar sauce and coleslaw. In a month dominated by a cooking centric holiday, this quick and easy meal is a welcome addition. |
Thanksgiving gets a decided New Orleans flair, courtesy of the Chase family, owners of the 67-year-old Dooky Chase restaurant. Co-owner Leah Chase shares her secret for tender, juicy breast meat on her turkey - she wraps the bird in foil, which locks in the moisture, then unwraps it and turns up the heat in the final 30 minutes to crisp the skin. Of course, one can't celebrate the holiday with turkey alone. So there's also rich and creamy oyster stew, and Acadian syrup cake with a fistful of spices, as well as dark, thick cane syrup. A story on side dishes includes the fun-looking sweet potato casserole, where half is topped with molten marshmallows, and the other half crowned with a combo of brown sugar and salted cashews. And when a 49ers offensive lineman comes home to visit his Mom in Utah, just what does she put on the table? Try chile con queso, spinach and artichoke dip, and pizzas that keep on coming. - written by Carolyn Jung Sangkhaya Mak Eu (coconut squash custard), a Laotian dessert in which sweet coconut custard is baked inside a hollowed-out kabocha squash. I can't get enough of kabocha in savory or sweet guises, so this recipe definitely caught my fancy. rate, comment & access recipe Truffade (skillet-cooked potatoes and cheese). Potatoes? Cheese? What's not to like? This is supposedly like a cross between mashed potatoes and scalloped potatoes. How can you go wrong with that? rate, comment & access recipe

Slipped between the main meal themes find focused articles on fresh spinach – from baked to sautéed to fresh dressed salads – and a primer on homemade salsa or hot sauce using the last of late Autumn’s tomato harvest. Learn how to choose the healthiest, tastiest olive oil; the latest research on feeding our mind and memory, new research on the Mediterranean diet, even what to feed your pets and how to reduce the environmental impact of food waste. - written by Foodie RecipeRose With the chill of Fall in the air, I’m looking forward to making Chorba, a hearty Moroccan vegetable soup with beef or lamb, a little pasta, a variety of root vegetables and tomatoes, seasoned with turmeric, saffron, cilantro and parsley. rate, comment & access recipe Italian Hazelnut Cookies are on my to try list – it’s a crispy cookie called Brutti Ma Buoni, literally meaning ugly, but it looks to me like an attractive meringue macaroon with added sweetness and crunch of hazelnuts. rate, comment & access recipe
