Cookies! Need I say more? The hard part is choosing which to bake first. Will it be the cute-as-a-button glittery lemon sandwiches? Orange pistachio crescents? Dulce de leche half moons? In my case, it'll probably be all three. If you're still hunting for new holiday dishes to add to the big festive day, you're sure to find something tempting in the feature "Comfort and Joy'' which is what the holidays really are all about, aren't... |
The first time I heard the name Tyler Florence it was in connection to the New York restaurant Cafeteria, which was a favorite spot for the Sex and the City girls and at the time known for having the best Macaroni and Cheese in town. But, the South Carolina native has made the transition well from Master of Mac and Cheese to Food Network Star and virtual household name. In his new book, Dinner At My Place, he shares with us some of his favorite menus. Menus, that is, that he's prepared at his Mill Valley California home where, as he once told a neighbor his, "my house is the best restaurant in town". Tyler - I feel the same way about my own home! This cookbook has a menu designed for everyone and just about every occasion from the common to the obscure. A celebration for Dungeness crab... |
It’s that time of year again; time that is, for the Project Foodie Top Cookbook choices. This year the selection was a team project with Carolyn, Heather, Peggy and I each selecting our favorite recipes from one of four categories: Baking, General, Seasonal and Specialty. Over then next few posts we will share our choices, starting today with the top Baking cookbooks of 2008. "Martha Stewart's Cookies'' by Martha Stewart. Cookies are my favorite thing to bake, and I've been wanting to bake everything from this book ever since I got it. There are two features of this book that I especially love. One, there are photos of every cookie. And two, the chapters are divided into cookie texture types, such as "Light and Delicate,'' "Soft and Chewy,'' and "Rich and Dense.'' Must try recipes: Chewy Molasses Crinkles, and Brown-Butter Toffee Blondies. – picked by Carolyn... | |

by vicki Could Peanut Butter be dangerous ? Absolutely - if you are one of the 3 million Americans that are allergic to peanuts and/or tree nuts then peanut butter could be dangerous and deadly. So you think it is easy enough to just avoid nuts in foods that you buy or prepare. Would you think to check your ketchup bottle for peanuts? What about spaghetti sauce or crackers? My husband thought I was joking when I put a ketchup bottle back on the grocery shelf. He actually read the ketchup ingredients himself. Would you also avoid green peas? You would if you had a peanut allergy as peanuts are not really nuts, but belong to the legume family. Whereas almonds, cashews, pecans and walnuts are classified as tree nuts. However since many foods are manufactured in plants that process both nuts and tree nuts, because of cross contamination, both nuts and tree nuts should be avoided. I don’t remember anyone I went to school with that had a peanut allergy, but now everyone seems to know someone, including my 5 year old niece. This seems to follow what Dr. R. Wood, director of the pediatric allergy clinic at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in Baltimore, says that “the prevalence of food allergy is growing and probably will continue to grow along with all allergic diseases" Cooking meals for a person with a peanut allergy has become much easier as of January 2006 when all food labels are required to list the 8 most common food allergens: peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish. One gets very good at reading food labels before using ingredients in recipes or in coming up with substitutions such as olive oil for peanut oil, bread crumbs instead of chopped nuts,… The typical school lunch box that contains a PBJ sandwich may no longer be welcome in many schools because of the many children that suffer peanut allergies. According to the Food and Drug Administration, food allergy reactions could include tingling sensations in the mouth, swelling of the tongue and throat, difficulty breathing, hives, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, a drop in blood pressure, or a loss of consciousness and death. Unfortunately peanut allergies usually do not go away as a child becomes an adult. You can get more information about food allergies by visiting the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network. So next time you eat one of those top allergen foods, enjoy it for yourself and for all the others that will never be able to taste it. ;)
