Resveratrol: The Effects of a Spa in Every Glass Print E-mail

ImageThis won't be the first time you savvy readers learn about the health benefits of drinking red wine.  And with the recent wild and crazy stock market - and inevitably higher stress levels - let's hear it for the stress-busting health benefits of wine!

But really, what is it precisely about red wine that has caused all the hype of the past few years?  It's all about resveratrol, an antibiotic compound produced as part of a plant's defense system, which is found primarily in the skins of grapes, but also present in the seeds, roots, and vines.  While not definitive, tests on mice and human cell lines have indicated that resveratrol may help prevent cancer and cardiovascular disease.  As an effective antioxidant, resveratrol inhibits free radical formation and seems to decrease the chances of tumor formation. Studies of resveratrol on mice have also shown a dramatic increase in endurance.

Although resveratrol is also present in other foods and plants such as peanuts, mulberries, eucalyptus, spruce, and lilies, it is found in greater quantities in wine grapes.  Because the amount of this magical compound in wine depends upon how long the juice has contact with the skins during fermentation, red wines possess more health benefits than white.

So in addition to that apple a day, have a glass of red - and cleanse your body of all stress the fun way!
