Memories of Thanksgivings Past Print E-mail

ImageAs Thanksgiving approaches and I plan for this year’s feast I am reminded of Thanksgiving's past.  Most of my Thanksgiving memories are very fond.  I think the earliest Thanksgiving memory I have is helping my mom set the "formal" dinning room table when I was about five.  I remember being excited, smelling the turkey aromas, and being very careful with the China.  I cherish this memory and always keep with the tradition of having a formal table setting for Thanksgiving.  I also always serve Turkey and still use my mom's stuffing recipe which I always eat way too much of!  I also always entirely prepare the entire feast - nothing store bought or pre-made.

Unfortunately, not every Thanksgiving has gone exactly to plan.  On one Thanksgiving I visited then to-be-Husband arriving the day before Thanksgiving.  He hadn't bought anything for the meal so we went shopping and got what we needed.  Since we were students we bought a generic store brand turkey.  Unfortunately, they only had large ones left and we ended up with a 22 pound turkey - just for the two of us!  As we always do we got up relatively early to prepare, stuff, and cook the bird.  I don't remember cooking it too long but I think we must have decided, since it was so big, it needed to cook a long time.  We clearly cooked it too long.  When we took it out of the roasting pan it literally fell apart.  I can still remember how it looked - almost like a bomb had gone off in the turkey and splattered turkey parts all over.  I doubt we'll ever do much worse than that for future Thanksgivings!

Another year we opened the Turkey on Thanksgiving morning only to find the giblets missing.  This may not bother some people but my stuffing recipe, or rather my mom's, is a giblet stuffing recipe.  I was rather upset but Husband saved the day by quickly going to the store. Thankfully the store was open for a few hours and he was able to get giblets saving the day.

Over the years I've learned you can never plan for everything but it also seems, thankfully, things generally work out one way or the other. Perhaps this is because Thanksgiving, while encompassing a huge feast of wonderful food, is not really about the food but about friends, family and enjoying ones life...
